The present research aims to investigate the iconography and trajectories of the cylindrical tripod vessels recovered by the excavations of the Carnegie Institute of Washington, during the 1930s and 1940s, in Kaminaljuyu, Guatemala. In the case of the trajectories we seek to restore, as far as possible, the multiple material networks and use of these ceramics: its manufacture, ritual and funerary applications, reintroduction in society and subsequent musealization. In the same way, we seek to point out the motifs and themes present in the iconography of the vessels, in order to infer their symbolic meaning for the ancient elites of the site. To trace the course of these vessels, we applied theories and methods linked to materiality, especially a current that seeks to observe the circulation of objects through a biographical bias or “social life of things”; even so, we combine this method with the traditional iconographic analysis for the symbolic identification of the scenes painted in the vessels. In addition, a corpus of cylindrical tripods was produced, aiming beyond its organization, to provide a research tool for future researchers. With this we hope to shed new light on the use of themes and styles in the painted ceramics of the Esperanza phase in Kaminaljuyu.

O estudo analisa elementos da cultura açoriana e de seus descendentes, considerando as tradições e a religiosidade, presentes na Região Vale do Taquari, Rio Grande do Sul/Brasil. O referencial teórico ancora-se em autores com foco em estudos culturais. O método de abordagem é o qualitativo e de conteúdo, utilizado no tratamento de fontes bibliográficas orais e documentais. O estudo, inicialmente, apresenta a colonização açoriana no Rio Grande do Sul e na Região Vale do Taquari, delimitando como recorte espacial, particularmente, os municípios de Taquari e de Paverama. Na sequência, e tomando como fio condutor os referidos municípios, analisam-se elementos culturais dos açorianos e de seus descendentes na Região Vale do Taquari, considerando aspectos gastronômicos, arquitetônicos e irmandades religiosas, com enfoque na procissão de Corpus Christi e nas festas em homenagem aos santos padroeiros das capelas e das igrejas.

This paper is designed to serve as an introduction and historical background to ethnomathematics as a program of study. The authors wants to show that ethnomathematics includes the mathematical ideas, perspectives and practices of individuals in different cultures as manifested and transmitted in diverse modes. Any study of the history of ethnomathematics and its proponents helps us to clarify the importance of this perspective in terms of mathematics education. The development of ethnomathematics is documented here, principally as a part of the study of the development of scientific and mathematical ideas and practices made by distinct cultural groups.

A Eternidade de Wiñaypacha como imagem do pensamento andino

Wiñaypacha (which means Eternity) - the first Peruvian feature film spoken entirely in Aymara - recently premiered, achieving tremendous success not only in Peru but also internationally. Directed by Óscar Catacora, a young Peruvian filmmaker of Aymara origin, the film is a masterpiece due to both its aesthetic and narrative qualities. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how the film’s script and photography, also signed by the director, work as poetic and potent resources that are revealing of Andean thought regarding, in particular, the idea of Eternity. Finally, it lays emphasis on how, with the success of Wiñaypacha, Andean peoples are now protagonists in places where, thus far, they were mainly bound to subordinate roles.
