Mobility

Weak

  • Protection Paladin excels in utility with powerful spells like Blessing of Sacrifice, Blessing of Freedom, Blessing of Protection, and Blessing of Spellwarding all providing excellent group support in M+ dungeons. They handle bleeds and mechanics effectively with Divine Shield and Blessing of Spellwarding.
  • A Protection Paladin's Word of Glory offers strong self-healing based on missing health, with Hand of the Protector boosting healing for others similarly.
  • While their single-target damage is decent with Moment of Glory, it suffers when opting for defensive talents like Sentinel.
  • However, Protection Paladin has significant weaknesses, including limited mobility with Divine Steed as their only movement ability. They also rely on standing in Consecration, making movement challenging and reducing defensive benefits.

Gameplay Altering Talents

Discover all talents that significantly alter your gameplay within the Spec and Class Talent trees. This section gives a concise overview of these talents and their applications but for a more detailed look check out the Rotation andDeep Divesections below.

Spec Tree

  • Righteous Protector
    • Gives much higher uptime on both Avenging Wrath / Sentinel and Guardian of Ancient Kings. This allows for higher uptime on 2 strong defensives, while also granting a very large DPS increase increased uptime on Avenging Wrath / Sentinel.
  • Consecration in Flame
    • Makes Consecration last 2 seconds longer and increases its damage by 20%. This makes Consecration last 14 seconds, which makes it much easier to weave into the rest of your abilities without having to worry about refreshing it very often unless there is heavy movement.
  • Sanctified Wrath
    • Both Avenging Wrath / Sentinel are given increased uptime to 25 seconds duration. Additionally, giving Judgment increased Holy Power generation by 1.
  • Zealot's Paragon
    • Extends the duration of Avenging Wrath with each cast of Judgment and Hammer of Wrath.
  • Shining Light
    • Makes your Word of Glory free after 3 Shield of the Righteous and has a maximum of 2 stacks. This talent is integral to playing Protection Paladin!
  • Barricade of Faith
    • You want to prioritize Avenger's Shield to keep up this potent defensive buff active.
  • Sanctuary
    • The effects of Consecration persists for 4 seconds after leaving, which makes heavy movement more manageable.

Class Tree

  • Sanctified Plates
    • Increases your armor by 10%, Stamina by 10%, and reduces damage taken from area of effect attacks by 10%. This is an incredibly strong passive defensive talent.
  • Divine Toll
    • Instantly casts Avenger's Shield on up to 5 targets within 30 yards. Generates 1 Holy Power per Target hit. This is affected by Divine Resonance which makes it so that after casting Divine Toll you instantly cast Avenger's Shield every 5 seconds for 15 seconds. This goes onto your main target.
    • Quickened Invocation reduces the cooldown of your Divine Toll by 15 seconds.
  • Resolute Defender
    • Allows you to use Ardent Defender and Divine Shield a lot more often, which makes for higher uptime on some of your strongest defensive cooldowns.
  • Greater Judgment
    • Judgment causes the target to take 40% increased damage from your next Shield of the Righteous.
  • Cavalier
    • This talent gives Divine Steed 2 charges, which makes planning movement much easier.

When to use this spec

This is a general talent loadout for Tyrannical affixes. To make your life easier, dungeon-specific talent loadouts are available in theDungeonssection.

Rotation

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Protection Paladin

Tier Set

  • 2-Set: Avenger's Shield grants you and your closes ally Ally of the Light, increasing Versatility by 8% for 8 sec.
  • 4-Set: Casting Hammer of the Righteous / Blessed Hammer increases your parry by 7% for 10 seconds and extends the duration of Ally of the Light by 1.0 sec.

The main gameplay change with this tier bonus is prioritizing Avenger's Shield if Ally of the Light is not active. Your 4-piece bonus extends Ally of the Light, so this is rare except during downtime or at the start of a pull. Additionally, you can maximize Ally of the Light in Mythic+ by positioning near players using strong damage cooldowns.

Opener

  • The goal of your opener as a Protection Paladin playing in Mythic+ is to get aggro of all enemies as fast as possible by doing a lot of AoE damage, while also making sure you're standing in Consecration all the time.

Priority List

  • Make sure to keep these lists in mind, follow this unless you are required to hold some abilities for a boss or strategy.

General

3+ Targets

10+ Targets

  1. Always stand in Consecration for damage reduction from Mastery and Sanctuary, aiming for 100% uptime.
  2. Cast Avenging Wrath on cooldown.
  3. Cast Divine Toll on cooldown.
  4. Cast Judgment if you have 2 charges.
  5. Cast Hammer of Wrath on cooldown.
  6. Cast Judgment on cooldown.
  7. Cast Avenger's Shield to maintain Ally of the Light and Barricade of Faith.
  8. Never cap Holy Power; always use Shield of the Righteous at 3-5 Holy Power.
  9. Cast Blessed Hammer to keep up Ally of the Light.
  10. Only use Word of Glory with Shining Light procs when below 70% health, or in emergencies when Shield of the Righteous uptime is high.
  11. Refresh Consecration.

On 3+ targets, prioritize Avenger's Shield over Judgment and Hammer of Wrath for more damage. Use Bulwark of Righteous Fury to maximize Shield of the Righteous damage, especially in AoE. Use Grand Crusader procs immediately.

  1. Always stand in Consecration for damage reduction from Mastery and Sanctuary, aiming for 100% uptime.
  2. Cast Avenging Wrath on cooldown.
  3. Cast Divine Toll on cooldown.
  4. Cast Avenger's Shield on Cooldown.
  5. Cast Judgment on Cooldown.
  6. Cast Hammer of Wrath on Cooldown.
  7. Cast Blessed Hammer on Cooldown.

In scenarios with massive target numbers (10+), prioritize Blessed Hammer over Hammer of Wrath, unless priority single-target damage is needed.

  6. Cast Blessed Hammer on Cooldown.
  7. Cast Hammer of Wrath on Cooldown.

Defensive Cooldowns

  • Ardent Defender
    • This is your main defensive in Mythic+, pressing it almost on cooldown, especially at the start of a pull. With Unbreakable Spirit and Resolute Defender, its low cooldown makes it ideal for frequent use. It also has a cheat death component, allowing survival against extreme hits.
  • Eye of Tyr
    • Used to smooth damage intake or for large tank hits, this ability is a debuff on enemies within 8 yards. In AoE with Inmost Light, spam it on cooldown for damage and survivability.
    • Note that it does not work on environmental damage.
  • Guardian of Ancient Kings
    • Use Guardian of Ancient Kings for extremely large tank hits or to smooth very high damage intake.
  • Sentinel
    • Use this spell almost off cooldown. The health and damage reduction bonuses decay over time, so ideally enter Sentinel with 5 Holy Power to keep it up as long as possible.
  • Blessing of Spellwarding
    • Use this spell for large magic damage hits or to preemptively prevent powerful magic debuffs from applying. Remember, it can be used on others as well as yourself. Occasionally, this spell can "bug" and cause certain mobs to target the second highest threat instead, but this is rare.
  • Divine Shield
    • With Final Stand talented, this becomes the most powerful defensive ability in the game, making you immortal for 8 seconds. Use it as a defensive measure when you need something to carry you outside of Sentinel.

Offensive Cooldowns

  • Avenging Wrath
    • Use Avenging Wrath almost off cooldown due to high cooldown reduction from Righteous Protector, allowing you to spend a lot of Holy Power and get the cooldown back faster. Occasionally, hold it briefly to align with better cooldown windows, which is very boss or dungeon-specific. In higher-level M+, Sentinel is used more frequently, so Avenging Wrath won't be used as much.
  • Divine Toll
    • Use Divine Toll almost off cooldown, especially at the start of a pull. Hold it briefly only if delaying for boss add spawns offers more value. In higher-level M+, Divine Toll is also a utility cooldown due to interupts and utilising the Avenger's Shield that spawn from Divine Resonance, allowing you to control a mob very well.

Deep Dive

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Protection Paladin

Holy Shield and Block

  • Block is a mechanic exclusive to Protection Warriors and Protection Paladins. For Protection Paladins, block is more random since there isn't a 100% block chance active mitigation spell. It's important to consider whether a tank mechanic is blockable to assess how threatening it is for a Protection Paladin. Holy Shield is an important passive to consider, as it allows using fewer defensives for spell-blockable tank busters compared to other tanks.

Consecration and Movement

  • Keep Consecration up 100% of the time and stay inside it when possible for damage reduction and substantial damage. Since it's a global cooldown ability, don't press it off cooldown without thought, or you'll lose Holy Power from abilities like Judgment and Blessed Hammer. Optimizing movement is crucial, as it frees up global cooldowns for other abilities and ties survivability to Consecration. Plan dungeon mechanics and defensives around Consecration for heavy movement encounters. Use a Consecration WeakAura to track its duration and your position, ensuring you can quickly replace it, as tanking outside of it in high-level content can be dangerous.

Shield of the Righteous and Word of Glory

  • Shield of the Righteous is your main active mitigation, costing 3 Holy Power and granting a 4.5-second armor buff based on Strength. Avoid using Shield of the Righteous past 13.5 seconds duration of the buff, as it's capped to this amount. Any further Shield of the Righteous will not extend the buff more, the only reason to keep on using Shield of the Righteous is for more damage or if you‘re otherwise overcapping your Holy Power. This allows for more efficient use of Holy Power on Word of Glory for healing.
  • Word of Glory costs 3 Holy Power and heals up to 250% of your missing health or up to 100% of an ally's missing health with Hand of the Protector. Generally, use it with Shining Light procs. However, if Shield of the Righteous has 10+ seconds remaining and an emergency heal is needed, or before a big hit, use Word of Glory. Note that it has a 1.5-second GCD, leading to a DPS loss compared to Shield of the Righteous.
  • By balancing these two abilities based on your current Holy Power and your immediate needs, you can maximize both your mitigation and healing efficiency.

Avenger's Shield

  • Avenger's Shield has a 3-second silence effect that can be refreshed with subsequent casts, allowing indefinite interrupts and CCs with Grand Crusader procs. Divine Toll can also interrupt mobs, and tracking Divine Resonance is crucial for additional Avenger's Shields. It provides strong buffs through Ally of the Light and Barricade of Faith. As a defensive, it’s powerful with Bulwark of Order. Tracking absorbs is essential to maximize your survivability in Mythic+.

Understanding Mechanics

Rotational min-maxing is just one aspect of mastering a specialization, but there are numerous other key mechanics that influence your performance. Use the following guides to improve them.

  • Pandemic
  • Spell Queue Window
  • Stat Diminishing Returns

Boss Tips

Hackclaw's War-Band

  • You can use Divine Shield or pre-use Blessing of Spellwarding to prevent Decayed Senses incapacitation. Alternatively, Stoneform can remove it, or you can get a Mass Dispel if the healer cannot dispel it.
  • During Savage Charge, soak the targeted player and use defensives as it deals significant damage. Save Ardent Defender for every charge.
  • Keep interrupting Earth Bolt with Rebuke and Avenger's Shield to mitigate damage and gain Holy Power from Punishment.

Treemouth

  • Use Blinding Light and Divine Toll to control Decaying Slimes from Decay Spray before they complete their Gushing Ooze cast.
  • Vine Whip is a fast tank frontal that can be turned while casting, so aim it away from the team. It has a small knockback that can be immuned with Divine Shield.

Gutshot

  • Gut Shot deals significant damage, so use a defensive when tanking it, as the damage can be random due to blocking. Use Ardent Defender frequently to mitigate the damage. Beware of the small knockback, which can be immuned with Divine Shield.
  • Call Hyenas summons two Hyenas, requiring the tank to gain threat. Avoid the deadly Crippling Bite cast by stunning or outranging it. For the bleed effect, use Stoneform, Cauterizing Flame, Divine Shield, or Blessing of Protection.
  • Master's Call is being cast when a Hyena is in a trap, be ready to interrupt it.

Decatriarch Wratheye

  • Decaystrike applies a heavy heal absorb. Rotate defensives then pool Holy Power to double-cast Word of Glory and remove it quickly.
  • Rotburst Totem always spawn in the furthest away position from the boss keep this in mind when moving the boss around.
  • Choking Rotcloud is a boss frontal you need to aim. The cloud travels clockwise, so keep this in mind when placing Rotburst Totem.
  • Maximize damage globals on the totem, as killing the totem is the most important part of the fight.

Trash Tips

  • Pack Tactics from Warscourge, Rotsinger, and Ranger increase their damage significantly. Keep this in mind during large pulls.
  • Use Blinding Light and Hammer of Justice to stop Summon Lashers from Decayed Elders, significantly reducing your group's damage taken.
  • Stop Vicious Clawmangle from Claw Fighters with any of your available stops.

Boss Tips

Magmatusk

  • During this boss, focus on easing the fight for the group through boss movement. Your positioning can largely dictate whether Blazing Charge goes at a good or bad angle.
  • If the frontal targets you, rotate appropriate defensives as it hits hard and can cause significant ticking damage, especially if you're already low from melees.

Chargath, Bane of Scales

  • Fiery Focus deals significant damage, so always use defensives. Drag the boss through 3 chains one at a time to stun and end the phase. Use Divine Shield and Guardian of Ancient Kings due to movement and ground swirls, reducing the high risk of death.

Forgemaster Gorek

  • Heated Swings deals significant damage, so rotate defensives accordingly. At the end of the cast, get knocked back to the same location to minimize puddle space and help team positioning. Avoid using Divine Shield, but if necessary, use Divine Steed immediately to reposition.

Warlord Sargha

  • You can cast Hammer of Justice on the Burning Ember to stun it for your group. If you want to kill it make sure to position the boss around it to have it in melee.
  • Since the boss doesn't have a tank mechanic your main objective is to pick up Piles of Gold to gain the weapons to break the Magma Shield.
    • Make sure to use Stoneform after picking up the gold to remove the curse. Divine Shield and Blessing of Spellwarding can be used to not have the curse apply its debuff on you when you pick up the gold.

Trash Tips

  • When fighting multiple Lava Flares, use Blinding Light to stop their casts, putting them on cooldown. Also, use Avenger's Shield to interrupt them.
  • Keep an eye out for Qalashi Bonesplitter's Dragonbone Axe and Pierce Marrow and disrupt them.
  • Qalashi Wardens cast Blazing Slash on you which is one of the most deadly tank busters in Mythic+, watch out for that.
  • Magma Fist is a frontal from Qalashi Trainee, so make sure to face them away from your group
  • Reverberating Slam is another very deadly tank buster be ready for it and make sure to use a defensive. You can Divine Shield the application of the debuff.

Boss Tips

Granyth

  • Nokhud Saboteurs are the spawned add that needs to be killed during the fight.
    • Make sure to use Hammer of Justice in order to delay them moving so that they can be focused down easily.

The Raging Tempest

  • Energy Surge is an important mechanic to look out for, it buffs the boss to do magic damage with its melee swings if it's not purged.
    • If you have a purge class in your group make sure to let them know you can't do anything against this
    • In case you need to tank it make sure to rotate strong defensives, perhaps even Blessing of Spellwarding and or Divine Shield as it can be very deadly.
  • Minmaxing Surge of Power stacks are very important since they don't only buff your damage but also healing done making it easier to survive.
    • In most cases leave the stacks to the DPS players first since surviving this fight is normally not a big issue
  • If you run out of melee range the boss instantly casts Wind Burst which does very high magic damage. This means if you ever need to leave melee press a defensive as soon as possible otherwise you might perish.

Teera and Maruuk

  • The most important part of your group's survival and your own is that you move the bosses together as fast as possible on every Spirit Leap, this is because the bosses receive a stacking damage buff from Ancestral Bond.
    • In some cases, it's unavoidable that the boss gets 1-2 stacks.
  • Brutalize is the main tank nuke coming from Maruuk, it deals a huge amount of physical damage to you
    • Make sure to be inside Consecration and use Ardent Defender or Guardian of Ancient Kings.
    • If you're ever outside of Consecration because of the heavy movement be sure to use Divine Shield.
  • The overlap of Gale Arrow and Brutalize is also something to beware of and plan defensives accordingly.
    • Blessing of Spellwarding can be used to save someone from Gale Arrow damage.

Balakar Khan

  • This fight is split into 2 phases tank mechanic that changes based off the phase:
  • Phase 1 the boss casts Rending Strike, a bleed that increases your damage taken from the next mechanic Savage Strike by 500% this is by far the highest damage hit you'll be taking in this fight so make sure to start rolling defensive for each of these
    • If you are a Dwarf or have an Evoker in your group you can utilize their bleed removal mechanics through Cauterizing Flame and Stoneform to completely negate the 500% damage taken increase making it deal almost no damage.
    • You can also use Divine Shield and Blessing of Protection to remove the debuff.
  • In Intermission make to use Divine Toll to gather the adds and interrupt Storm Bolt casts. Be sure to use Blinding Light as well to stop them.
  • In Phase 2 the boss casts Conductive Strike into Thunder Strike the same way the first phase does except with the change that its magic damage instead. Additionally, the debuff that increases damage taken can be dispelled so make sure your healer dispels you here.
    • Thunder Strike cannot kill you with Ardent Defender up. Just make sure to rotate Divine Shield and Blessing of Spellwarding since this does a lot of damage and both those spells prevent the debuff from Conductive Strike.

Trash Tips

  • This Dungeon has a lot of mobs that need good interrupts to prevent casts from happening as they cast frequently and they wipe the group so make sure to use Avenger's Shield and smart use of Divine Resonance to interrupt these mobs:
    • Soulharvesters Death Bolt Volley.
    • Primalist Stormspeaker Stormbolt and Tempest.
    • Primalist Thunderbeast's Chain Lightning.
  • The following is a list of abilities from certain mobs that need stops, such as Blinding Light and Hammer of Justice:
    • Nokhud Hornsounder Rally the Clan
    • Nokhud Beastmaster Hunt Prey
    • Desecrated Ohuna Rotting Wind
    • Risen Mystic Swift Wind
  • Primal Stormshields deal very high magic tank damage so try to make sure you have enough defensives ready when pulling multiple of them.
  • Unstable Squall casts Surge on whoever has aggro, it is important to instantly get aggro on this mob as Surge deals extremely high damage.
  • Ukhel Deathspeaker casts Chant of the Dead. Make sure to move all undead enemies out of it as they get empowered.

Boss Tips

Overgrown Ancient

  • This boss casts Barkbreaker increasing your physical damage taken by 100% for 8 seconds and is very deadly since it also works on the later spawned Lashers in the fight
    • Make sure to pre-use any of your defensives when getting hit by this mechanic but keep in mind that it also deals a decent amount of initial damage.
    • Can use Divine Shield and Blessing of Protection to remove the debuff.
  • When playing with Germinate, it's essential to stay stacked with the group. This positioning ensures that the Lasher adds spawn in a concentrated area, allowing you to quickly gain aggro and enabling the group to eliminate them more efficiently.
  • When Burst Forth is being cast all dormant lashers wake up and attack players. It's crucial that you gain threat on all of these so plant Consecration as close to the middle of them as possible, and use Divine Toll every other wave to pick them up. Holding an Avenger's Shield just as they spawn to hit as many as possible and do splash damage with Tyr's Enforcer is a good idea to get aggro quickly.
    • The Lashers debuff you with Lasher Toxin. You can dispel this with Cleanse Toxins or Stoneform, especially during the Barkbreaker debuff.
    • Use Divine Shield to immune the applications of the debuff as well if needed.
  • To efficiently manage the Ancient Branch, it's recommended to have a target macro for taunting, as it often spawns just out of melee range and can be hard to target. I typically focus taunt it. Additionally, using Avenger's Shield when it spawns silences it, preventing it from casting and ensuring it moves directly into melee range.

Crawth

  • Savage Peck does heavy upfront tank damage to you, as well as put a big bleed on you. Cycle defensives for each initial hit and make sure to make use of Divine Shield to prevent the bleed as much as possible.
    • If you are Dwarf or have an Evoker in your group you can utilize their bleed removal mechanics Cauterizing Flame and Stoneform to completely negate the mechanic and only take the initial damage which helps surviving it a lot.
  • Deafening Screech is the main magic damage mechanic happening every 25 seconds.
    • On higher stacks make sure to press a defensive more as it sometimes lines up with a Savage Peck bleed debuff and can be deadly, this is usually where you want to use immunities or Guardian of Ancient Kings.

Vexamus

  • This boss has a deadly tank frontal Arcane Expulsion. In lower keys just being inside Consecration is enough to survive. However, in higher keys you need to rotate defensives. Ardent Defender is enough to live, so rotate other strong defensives when you don't have access to it.
  • Preferably you soak around 2 Arcane Orbs on each rotation to make the fight easier for the rest of the group.
  • Around 2 minutes into the fight there is a deadly overlap of Mana Bomb and Arcane Fissure. You can potentially save someone with Blessing of Spellwarding if they don't have a strong defensive available.

Echo of Doragosa

  • Move the boss when one area of the boss room gets too crowded with Arcane Rifts.
    • At the start of the fight, the boss casts two Arcane Rifts in the center of the room. To manage this, bring the boss to the entrance area. These two pools are despawning two minutes into the fight.
  • Power Vacuum pulls you towards the boss. You can use Divine Shield to immune the knock, which can potentially save you.

Trash Tips

  • In this dungeon there are some very dangerous tank buster mechanics on trash that you should be aware of:
    • Guardian Sentry Storm Slash does very high magic damage
    • Eagle Peck stacks up a heavy ticking bleed.
    • Spellbound Battleaxe Severing Slash big initial damage with a bleed after the hit.
  • Some very dangerous mobs need stopping, so be sure to utilize Avenger's Shield well for interrupts and Blinding Light for disrupting the following mobs:
    • Corrupted Manafiend Surge and Mana Void
    • Spellbound Scepter Mystic Blast big AoE cast needs to be stopped
    • Unruly Textbook Monotonous Lecture
    • Spectral Invoker Arcane Missiles

Pre Dungeon Start

  • I always take Bronze Dragonflight Pledge Pin before the dungeon starts.

Boss Tips

Watcher Irideus

  • Titanic Fist is a fast frontal cast that you want to aim away from the group and dodge it quickly for yourself.
  • Utilize your Blinding Light to stop Nullification Devices from casting Purifying Blast on your group.

Gulping Goliath

  • Make sure to ask for slows for Curious Swoglets with or talent into Consecrated Ground if needed.
  • Make sure to keep all Curious Swoglets inside the Gulp. Additionally, you should stand in it to not make the boss enraged.
    • Dispel poison stacks on yourself or others with Cleanse Toxins. You can also prevent the stacks on yourself or others with Blessing of Spellwarding and Divine Shield.

Khajin the Unyielding

  • This does a lot of group damage but every now and then it casts Frost Shock dealing high magic damage to you and slowing you.
    • Pre-use Blessing of Freedom before the timer and immune the slow portion of the mechanic, making it easier to plan movement for higher uptime of Consecration.
  • Make sure to move the boss close to the Ice Boulders to ensure melee uptime during Hailstorm casts.
  • You may need to off heal on this boss and help your healer with Lay on Hands, Word of Glory, and Blessing of Sacrifice. It is a very punishing boss on higher level keys.

Primal Tsunami

  • Squall Buffet + Focused Deluge are very hard hitting tank busters that cast back to back.
    • Squall Buffet does high inital damage and knock you back. Make sure to instantly Hand of Reckoning to make sure no one gets meleed while you are pushed out of melee range.
    • Focused Deluge does a lot more damage over time than initially. Use big defensives for this mechanic, such as Guardian of Ancient Kings. You can also Divine Shield and immune the knockback and damage from Squall Buffet and therefore immune some of the ticks of Focused Deluge afterwards.
  • When starting the intermission use Avenger's Shield to stack up as many casters as possible. A well used Divine Toll can be fantastic for interrupting all of the mobs and syncing their casts together so that AoE stops are more effective.
  • In the Intermission make sure to stop Inundate with your Blinding Light if needed. Hammer of Justice is also strong to lockdown 1 caster.

Trash Tips

  • To minimize the chance of getting stunned by Cheap Shot from Skulking Zealots place a Consecration near them to break their stealth.
  • Glacial Proto-Dragons are very deadly for tanks with their Oceanic Breath. Divine Shield immunes the damage, but otherwise, you need to rotate big defensives for each breath.
    • Glacial Proto-Dragons are accompanied by Primalist Icecallers which cast Ice Shard on you as a tank, this spell is a deadly fast cast that can be disrupted so make use of your Blinding Light and Hammer of Justice. However, these pulls are very hard for the tank, and as such it is expected of your group to help with the majority of stops to make tanking easier on such difficult pulls.
  • Apart from these there are some more general stops/disrupts that are useful to keep an eye out for:
    • Refti Defender Demoralizing Shout
    • Primalist Shocktrooper Elemental Focus
    • Primalist Galesinger Thunderstrike

Boss Tips

Leymor

  • It can be difficult to pick up aggro on all the Bubbling Sapplings that spawn after Consuming Stomp, so it's advisable to move into the center as soon as possible and place down a Consecration to help gain threat. Also, try and save Divine Toll to pick up the adds quickly.
  • Infused Strike can be immuned with Divine Shield and Blessing of Spellwarding.
  • Erupting Fissure is a very high damage frontal. You should cycle Ardent Defender and Guardian of Ancient Kings.
    • You can also outrange it if you don't have enough defensives but this is quite difficult to do as a slow class.
    • Erupting Fissure needs to be aimed at the Tress to clear them make sure to pick a good spot long before the cast happens since you want to position the boss as well as possible.
  • Consuming Stomp does a decent amount of damage to you but overall should not be deadly.

Azureblade

  • Summon Draconic Image spawns a Draconic Image that needs to be interrupted. Move the boss towards them, unless they are being hard CC'ed. Use Avenger's Shield when possible and Hammer of Justice to interrupt and stun them.
  • Arcane Cleave is the main tank mechanic that is also a frontal cleave, it does a high amount of damage. Make sure to rotate Ardent Defender with other big defensives, to survive it. You can also outrange this mechanic if you run fast enough away with Divine Steed.

Telash Greywing

  • This boss does not do anything special for tanks, the only dangerous part is the Absolute Zero since it drops you quite low while the boss flies down to you to hit you instantly. Make sure to pull Holy Power to instantly cast Shield of the Righteous as soon as he lands, as well as a defensive, such as Ardent Defender.

Umbrelskul

  • Dragon Strike is a very deadly tank mechanic, you want to rotate big defensives to tank it effectively. Be sure to use Divine Shield and Blessing of Spellwarding for yourself. Whenever you have to tank a Dragon Strike with just Ardent Defender, be sure to Word of Glory instantly afterwards, as it procs instantly.
  • To increase the odds that Detonating Crystals spawn stacked you can tank the boss on the edges of the room which removes half of the possible spawn locations.
    • The crystals spawn at 75%, 50%, and 25% boss hp.

Trash Tips

  • One of the important interrupts in this dungeon is Icy Bindings from the Rune Seal Keepers if not interrupted it causes a groupwide root. This may wipe you, since during these pulls there are many ground mechanics to dodge. You can Blessing of Freedom if it does go through, to make it perhaps salvageable.
    • This cast can be stopped by all of your AoE crowd control if necessary or kicks.
  • Crystal Furies cast Piercing Shards quite frequently, which is managable during the beginning, but becomes much harder later on with high stacks. You want to save big defensives, and immunitys such as Divine Shield to immune the stacks and allow you to have a smoother time.
  • Ice Cutter from both Vault Guards & Scalebane Lieutenant deals massive damage, especially if you don't block it. Rotate all of your defensives on these pulls, and once you have nothing left you should quickly leave.
    • These packs are also accompanied by Rune Seal Keepers that inevitably cast Condensed Frost on you, which does a good amount of magic damage so be careful when tanking them.
    • Ice Cutter can also be stopped by any stun or AoE stop such as Blinding Light but the cast is quite fast.
  • Nullmagic Hornswog Null Stomp should be disrupted or stopped with Blinding Light and Hammer of Justice.
  • Use Avenger's Shield and Divine Resonance to keep the other noteworthy mobs cc'ed as follows:
    • Conjured Lasher Mystic Vapors
    • Arcane Elemental Waking Bane

Boss Tips

The Lost Dwarves

  • Baelog casts 2 spells that need to be aimed away from the group Wild Cleave and Heavy Arrow, so make sure that you aim them ideally into the wall.
  • PutOlafon focus to quickly interrupt him when he casts‍Defensive Bulwark.
  • The boss can be quite difficult to move when the fire puddles are coming, so be sure to rotate defensives when you may have to move out of Consecration.

Bromach

  • After the boss casts Call of the Deep 4 adds are summoned into the fight; 3 melee adds and 1 caster, make sure to grab aggro on all these running in with Consecration and Avenger's Shield. Additionally, use Avenger's Shield and Divine Toll to move the caster into melee quickly.
  • Quaking Totem summons a totem, make sure to move all the adds into the totem circle so they get stunned by Tremor when the totem dies, and also help dps the totem as well.

Sentinel Talondras

  • As a tank, your main job is to remove‍Inexorablestacks from the boss with Resonating Orb on the ground to stop Titanic Empowerment with the last one in the end.
  • If you have trouble moving the boss you can use Hammer of Justice instead of Resonating Orb to remove Inexorable. In fact, it is beneficial to use Hammer of Justice to appropriately minmax the Titanic Empowerment cast.
  • You can use Blessing of Protection on your allies affected by Earthen Shards. This is a bleed that does enormous damage and is often lethal. Be sure to watch the Health of these players as well and perhaps use Lay on Hands to save them as well.

Emberon

  • Searing Clap is the main frontal mechanic. This does a lot of damage so make sure to rotate strong defensives on this mechanic. Using Blessing of Spellwarding and Divine Shield prevents the application of the debuff Unstable Embers.

Chrono-Lord Deios

  • Move the boss around the room to ensure the uptime of any melee DPS or to allow your group members to Line of Sight the‍Wing Buffet.
    • Divine Shield prevents the knockback, which can be beneficial when it overlaps with a Sand Breath afterwards.
  • Sand Breath is another frontal boss mechanic and is similar to Emberon. It does a lot of damage to you so make sure to rotate defensives properly. Be sure to instantly Word of Glory after using Ardent Defender as you might be very low health.
  • Blessing of Freedom can be very useful in helping with Time Sink, as it acts as a dispel. When the boss casts Time Sink it goes onto a random party member, and when dispelled triggers Time Eruption. You should carefully use Blessing of Freedom, but it can still be very useful. You can also use Blessing of Spellwarding for this as well, but most likely on very high level keys you should save Blessing of Spellwarding for yourself to mitigate Sand Breath.

Trash Tips

  • Refti Custodians are the main tank killer with their Jagged Bite. The bleed it applies is dangerous and should be avoided by outranging the cast when it happens. You can mitigate this damage with Stoneform and Divine Shield if you do get hit.
    • Over time they stack up Ancient Power, increasing their dmg when stunned which applies a 50% damage increase to them Systemic Vulnerability that resets their stacks. Use Hammer of Justice to help yourself as much as possible with these mobs.
  • Some other noteworthy adds that can and should be disrupted or stopped with Blinding Light + Hammer of Justice:
    • Vicious Basilisk Spiked Carapace
    • Earthen Weaver Hail of Stone
    • Earthen Warder Curse of Stone
  • There are a lot of interrupts needed in this dungeon most notably from; Stonevault Geomancer Chain Lightning. Make sure to utilize Avenger's Shield and Divine Resonance well to keep these mobs kicked.

Boss Tips

Melidrussa Chillworn

  • Frigid Shard is being cast on you frequently. It does a good amount of magic damage and you need to use a defensive when Chillstorm is happening and overlaps.
    • Chillstorm pulls you towards its drop-off location and at the end does a bigger hit of dmg and pushback. Use Divine Steed to keep yourself in position inside Consecration. It is worth rotating Divine Shield and Blessing of Spellwarding to mitigate the amount of damage Chillstorm does.
  • At 75% and 45%, Melidrussa spawns a lot of Infused Whelps. Make sure to meet these Whelps when they spawn to pick them up with Consecration and Divine Toll in order to maximize damage and Holy Power gained.

Kokia Blazehoof

  • Searing Blows is the tank combo happening every time after Ritual of Blazebinding. This ability hurts a lot and it is random on how many stacks you can receive because you can parry it. You want to rotate strong defensives for every combo.
    • If you do get hit you receive Searing Wounds, this can be removed by an Evoker's Cauterizing Flame or the dwarf racial ability Stoneform.
    • Divine Shield is also very strong at removing the stacks.
  • To ensure as much time as possible between Blazebound Firestorms Inferno casts you should interrupt the first 2 Roaring Blazes early and the 3rd one late.

Erkhart Stormvein / Kyrakka

  • The initial hit of Stormslam is quite high so make sure to be ready with a defensive, on top of that you need to be dispelled after.
    • Divine Shield can immune the stacks from this ability.
  • Make sure to tank Erkhart Stormvein at the back of the room to ensure that Kyrakka always lands on the platform.

Trash Tips

  • Flame Dance from Primalist Flamedancers is the main tank killer. You need to disrupt this cast with Blinding Light and Hammer of Justice.
  • High Channeler Ryvati always prioritizes the tank with Shock Blast until you already have the debuff, and then he casts it on a random target in your group.
    • Shock Blast is also possible to be immuned with Divine Shield and Blessing of Spellwarding.
  • Primal Juggernaut is very scary because of its Crushing Smash that does an insane amount of damage to the tank. Respect this ability a lot.
  • Some other noteworthy adds that should be disrupted or stopped with Blinding Light and Hammer of Justice
    • Flashfrost Earthshaper Tectonic Slam
    • Flashfrost Chillweaver Ice Shield
  • Make sure to utilize Avenger's Shield and Divine Toll to deal with important interrupts. Some of them are as follows:
    • Primalist Cinderweaver Cinderbolt
    • Flame Channeler Flashfire
    • High Channeler Ryvati Shock Blast
    • Tempest Channeler Thunder Bolt

Affixes

Learn how to effectively handle various Mythic+ Affixes as a Protection Paladin. Depending on the level of the Mythic+ Dungeon, you contend with up to two additional Affixes alongside Fortified and Tyrannical.

  • Storming
    • Divine Shield and Blessing of Spellwarding can immune the damage and knock up effect meaning you can use it to soak Storming.
  • Entangling
    • Use Unbound Freedom to help yourself and a fellow teammate. You can pre-use it just before Entangling starts and it immunes the debuff.
  • Incorporeal
    • Hammer of Justice can be used to stun if need be.
    • Interuptable with Rebuke and Avenger's Shield
    • Turn Evil can be talented to help, but it's quite hard to do this in higher keys as Protection Paladin.
  • Afflicted
    • Cleanse Toxins can be used to dispell.
    • Can off heal with Word of Glory and Lay on Hands.
  • Volcanic
    • Divine Shield and Blessing of Spellwarding can immune the damage and knockup.
  • Raging
    • Care for when enemies become enraged as a lot more casts go through on you, so play accordingly and prepare to use defensives.
  • Bolstering
    • Play Consecrated Ground in order to slow and kite away from bolstered mobs.
  • Spiteful
    • Use Hammer of Justice to stun a shade.
    • Can use Consecrated Ground to slow shades.
  • Sanguine
    • Do not play Consecrated Ground otherwise your teammates won't play with you again.
  • Bursting
    • Stoneform (Dwarf Racial) is strong here to remove Bursting.
    • Divine Shield works to remove Bursting as well as prevent new stacks. Blessing of Spellwarding also prevents stacks.

Stat Priority

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Protection Paladin

Understand your secondary stat priority and the tertiary stats needed for optimal performance during Mythic + dungeons as a Protection Paladin. For more detailed information, visit the Stats and Attributes guide.

Survivability

Damage

Higher Item level items are better in most scenarios. For an accurate representation of what item to equip you should use Simcraft! A static "Stat Priority" is just a starting point and can easily shift depending on your individual gear.

All secondary stats are affected by diminishing returns. Click here to learn more!

Tertiary

  • Avoidance - Great stat to reduce the damage intake of "Area of Effect" abilities.
  • Leech - Provides additional healing through damage dealing. The damage of your pets does not heal you thus Leech is a great tertiary for us since most of our damage is coming from our own spells.
  • Speed - Niche tertiary that can be very useful and has been proven useful in the past. Makes playing certain mechanics a lot easier.

In general, Leech is really strong for tanks, especially in AoE trash scenarios it can be by far the best stat you can have.
Avoidance is great but most of the time tanks are not struggling to survive the typical Area of Effect abilities that it mitigates.

Trinkets

Trinkets come in two varieties: active and passive. Active trinkets require manual activation and inherit a cooldown providing a temporary boost to your output or survivability. On the other hand, passive trinkets provide a more consistent boost to your stats and abilities without requiring any actions.

Active Trinket alternatives

  • Elementium Pocket Anvil
    • Good on longer fights and is a strong offensive option that while an active is quite "passive."
  • Manic Grieftorch
    • Best ST damage trinket for Protection Paladin.
  • Fyrakk's Tainted Rageheart
    • The best absorb trinket, does some passive damage and has a very high value absorb. Is a very good Defensive trinket.

Passive Trinket alternatives

  • Augury of the Primal Flame
    • very good passive damage trinket.
  • Prophetic Stonescales
    • Cheat Death Trinket which can be useful for learning fights.
  • Cataclysmic Signet Brand
    • Very strong passive damage trinket.
  • Whispering Incarnate Icon
    • Strong statstick that also buffs your DPS and Healers who also wear this.

Embellishments

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Protection Paladin

  • 2x Shadowflame-Tempered Armor Patch
    • Really good since it just does damage to the target and procs your fire rings
    • On Wrists, Boots, Waist, or Cloak depending on your available gear.

Honorable mention

  • Elemental Lariat
    • Decent alternative for Mythic+.

Remaining Sparks

  • Make sure to apply Alchemical Flavor Pocket if you have an additional crafted item equipped to keep your food buff even if you die.
  • Crafted items are 525 item level and regular items are 528 on max item level, therefore, it's not beneficial to equip crafted items outside of your 2x embellishments unless you don't have access to other high item level gear on that slot.

Races

Patch 11.0 - The War Within

Protection Paladin

For min-maxing a Protection Paladin in Mythic+ Dungeons, different racial traits can provide a tremendous benefit to your characters. If this is not your top goal, picking a race that fits your style works just as well.

  • Stoneform -- Dwarf
    • Is very valuable due to the fact that you can dispel yourself or remove dangerous bleed effects.
    • On top of that using Stoneform gives you 10% physical DR which can be like a small extra personal as a tank for 8 seconds.
    • Use-case examples:
      • Bursting stacks.
      • Searing Wounds, Kokia Blazehoof (Ruby Life Pools)
      • Primal Chill, Whelps (Ruby Life Pools)
      • Rending Strike and Conductive Strike, Balakar Khan (Nokhud Offensive)
      • Dragon Strike, Umbrelskul (Azure Vault)
      • Savage Peck, Crawth (Algeth'ar Academy)
      • Splinterbark, Overgrown Ancient (Algeth'ar Academy)
      • Gushing Wound, Refti Defender (Halls of Infusion)
      • Deep Chill, Glacial Proto-Dragons (Halls of Infusion)
      • Withering, Fetid Rotsingers and Brackenhide Shapers (Brackenhide Hollow)
      • Crippling Bite, Gutshot Hyena (Brackenhide Hollow)
      • Chomp, Vicious Basilisk (Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr)
      • Jagged Bite, Refti Custodian (Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr)
      • Stolen Time, Infinite Timereavers (Uldaman: Legacy of Tyr)
  • Arcane Torrent -- Blood Elf
    • Strong racial to dispel or purge enemies, the value is very limited but sometimes can come in handy.
  • War Stomp -- Tauren
    • Strong AoE stun that can be used as a stop that lasts for 2 seconds.
    • Brawn gives 2% crit damage and healing.

Recommendation

I almost always play Dwarf as they are the strongest offensively tied with Tauren and defensively, thanks to Stoneform removing debuffs.
